Antonelli takes F1 title in third as Verstappen wins in Mexico
The 20-year-old became Formula 1’s youngest champion without winning the deciding race. The title threshold and the battle for the podium tell different stories.

Kimi Antonelli became Formula 1’s youngest world champion at 20 by finishing third in Mexico City on 1 November. Max Verstappen won ahead of Lewis Hamilton: the race victory and season title were separate prizes. [1][2]
The FIA says ninth would have secured Antonelli’s championship regardless of rival results. Autosport explains that, with neither George Russell nor Hamilton winning, his actual finishing position was immaterial to the title. The guaranteed pre-race threshold and the scenario that unfolded were different. [1][2]
The podium remained a contest. Autosport reports that Verstappen passed Charles Leclerc through the pit stops as Leclerc served a five-second penalty. After a red-flag interruption, Hamilton took second on the restart; Antonelli then overtook Leclerc for third. A later Safety Car gave Hamilton another restart opportunity. [2]
Verstappen finished 0.799 seconds ahead of Hamilton; Antonelli was 4.006 seconds behind the winner in the published classification. Those gaps describe the race, not the championship standings. Connecting the title threshold with the race sequence explains why Antonelli could celebrate a historic season from the third step of the podium. [1][2]
