Kenya lecturers end strike, with funding still due in stages
UASU says a signed return-to-work formula ends industrial action. Its funding timetable and expected Monday return still need follow-through.

Kenya's university lecturers' union says a signed return-to-work formula ends the strike that began on 2 October. It does not establish that the Sh20 billion settlement has reached employees.
UASU's 30 October release schedules the 2025–2029 collective bargaining funding over three financial years: Sh6.7 billion in 2026/27, Sh6.7 billion in 2027/28 and Sh6.6 billion in 2028/29. The total is a staged commitment, not a single completed payment.
Independent reporting by Emmanuel Wanjala in The Star on 29 October put the negotiations in context: the emerging Sh20 billion framework fell short of the unions' original demands and still awaited formal signing. That report describes the earlier bargaining position. It does not independently confirm the union's subsequent announcement or establish which earlier demands remain unresolved after signing.
The later union release announces signing and separate arrears arrangements. Read alongside the earlier report, it distinguishes reaching a compromise from implementing it. Neither source verifies individual payments.
UASU expects academic duties to resume on Monday, 2 November. That instruction is different from an observed campus restart. EWN has not verified revised university timetables or actual classes.
The next tests are the announced return and implementation of the funding arrangements. A strike-ending announcement is a concrete development; completed payments and restored teaching schedules are separate outcomes still to check.
